Zarma dance 3: Traditional Songhay Dance
part 1
Although the Songhay are
entirely Muslims, some of their customs predate the coming
of Islam in the early 10th century. This narrative dance,
which has many elements of the Dongo cult, date from this
early period. This old
clip was taken from Nigerien TV by
Ahmed. Instruments are a tsiriki
a traditional flute, a gooje a traditional fiddle (in
Songhay njarka), a dondoŋ
a talking drum and a kotso (kurukutu) a traditional snare drum.
Part 2 is Zarma dance number 4.
