Zarma dance 4: Traditional Songhay Dance
part 2
Although the Songhay are
entirely Muslims, some of their customs predate the coming
of Islam in the early 10th century. This is part 2 of a narrative dance,
which has many elements of the Dongo cult, date from this
early period. Part 1 is Zarma dance number 3. This old
clip was taken from Nigerien TV by
Ahmed. Instruments are a tsiriki
a traditional flute, a gooje a traditional fiddle (in
Songhay njarka), a dondoŋ
a talking drum and a kotso (kurukutu) a traditional snare drum.
