This video shows the entire final of
the 32nd edition of the traditional wrestling games in Tillabéri, Niger.
The pictures were shot
on 26 December 2010 and made available by Cri de Cigogne .org. On their website you can watch the
eighth, quarter and semi-finals as well as summaries of the
games of the earlier days of the games.
The finalist were Oumarou Ali dit Bindigao
from the Maradi region, 35 years old,
and the champion from the Dosso region Boubé Boureima. This
final lasted about 18 minutes, which is
relatively long compared to the finals of the three
previous games.
During most of the fight, the two opponents were exploring each
other rather than attacking. After a second short break, Boubé Boureima launched
a few attacks, but he didn't succeed in bringing Bindigao
down. It was Bindigao who won the plated sabre for the
second time in his career. Bindigao managed to get behind
Boureima in a blink of an eye and lifted his opponent into the
air; a technique that has also brought him
success in earlier fights.
At these games, 80 wrestlers attended in total; this is
10 per region. A complete list of finalist since 1975 is given here.
The Tillabéri games were the second games that took place in 2010. The first games of 2010
took place in Zinder in February. The Tillabéri games were
foreseen for the beginning of 2011 but the date of the games
was changed and they took place from 17 till 26 December. |
